Game 1:
Game one was held on a Monday that was cool and clear. The games were held
during the last hour and a half of the school day, so classes where short to allow the whole school to attend. During
lunch time, Heather's friend Monett (who is on Heather's team)starts putting Sammy, Marissa and Dot (who
are all on the same team) down. They ignore her and go on with their day.
When game time rolls around, Sammy and her team is excited about the game. They suit
up and go out onto the field. Marissa takes her place on the pitcher's mound, Dot goes to her spot on third and Sammy
crouches down behind home plate. The rest of the team is made up of eighth graders and, even though they all work together,
they kind of leave out the lowly seventh graders on their team. The first two batters strike out quickly and then the third
batter comes up to the plate. It is Heather Acosta. She hits the ball straight up and Sammy dives for it. Before Heather even
knew what had happened, the umpire was calling, "Three outs!"
Sammy's team won 6-1. After the game, Sammy's team tried to go up and shake hands
with the other team. They completely ignored them. When they finally did acknowledge them, Sammy went up to Heather
and, like a good sport, said, "Good game." Heather just stared at her for a minute and then, SPLAT!
She spit in her face! That brought on game two.
Game 2
Before the second game, Sammy and the other girls on the teams are in the locker room
changing into their uniforms. Sammy goes into the bathroom and when she comes out, her catcher's mitt is gone. She cannot
find it and suspects that Heather took it. Sammy is given a school mitt that barely fits her. She is so upset about her mitt
(it was her dad's and she never knew him) that she does horrible. It must have been contagious, because the rest of the team
didn't do very good either.
The final score was 5-0. Heather's team won. She didn't spit on Sammy this time but she
did sneer at her and say, "Good game".
Game 3: The Final Game
Before the last game, Marissa got Sammy a mitt to use. During the warm up, Marissa, Dot
and Sammy picked an eighth grader to run with to try to fit in better. By the end of their warm-up run, the seventh
graders felt like more of a team then they ever had before. All they had to do was open up and talk to the eighth graders.
Marissa had come up with a play that she called "The Fake." So when the bases were loaded
with one out and Sammy's team was down 5-4, it was the perfect time to use it. Sammy stood up from behind the plate and flashed
the Fake signal to all of the outfielders. She crouched back down as Tenille came up to bat. She hit the ball right to the
shortstop. Dawn (the shortstop) tossed the ball to Sammy and the whole team started jumping up and down like they just got
the third out, not the second. For awhile, it looked as though the Fake was going to be the Flop when the runner on second
came off the base and said, " Hey, wait a minute!" Sammy fired the ball to the second baseman and the runner was out. That
play gave them the boost they needed to win the game 6-5.
